UNS: 15th Anniversary of War Crime against 16 Employees of RTS

The Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) would like to remind that 23 April at 02.06 hrs marks the 15th anniversary of murder of 16 media workers in the NATO bombing of RTS and stresses that a comprehensive investigation of this war crime has not yet been implemented.

UNS supports and appreciates work of the Commission on Investigation of Murders of Journalists so far and expects it will have the key role in shedding light on all the circumstances of killing of 16 media workers.

UNS calls on the Ministry of Defence and Military-Security Agency to make all the substantial facts available to the Commission on Investigation of Murders of Journalists so that the responsible ones for this serious crime could be established.

UNS points out that all the important international organizations for protection of human rights have condemned murder of the civilians in RTS and that the Amnesty International considers the intentional attack on the RTS building as a civilian facility and killing of 16 media workers a war crime.

UNS reminds that the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) urged all the members at the assembly in Belgrade in 2011 to join UNS and SINOS in marking 23 April, the memory day for 16 media workers killed in the NATO bombing of RTS.

The practice of using the military force against media in the international conflicts was established by the bombing of RTS in 1999 despite the fact they represent civilian facilities and must not be a military target.
